Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
Summers, who formerly led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public emails revealed that Summers communicated with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization said it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to approve a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then move to the administration of the White House for signature. He has said he intends to endorse the bill, after reversing his stance on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The communications showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to notable global figures.

After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official stated he accepted "complete accountability for my poor decision to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to restore trust and mend bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

The professor occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
