A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was found soon after. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion included 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
