The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
