Chelsea's Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Pre-Match Period as The 'Most Difficult Two Days' with the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to the weekend's victory against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian offered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game press conference despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the mood after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to four matches.

But, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general performance, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period within the club.

"How the squad are eager to learn has been excellent and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with numerous issues, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he said.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people withheld support from us."

When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. In general," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are very content with the fans."

Injury and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary issues, remarking they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our best player but we play almost all season without our top player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to recognize because the work from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark

It was unclear who or what caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.

In that timeframe, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at Cobham, faced a pre-match news conference where he seemed relaxed, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any particular press stories had irked him, if social media discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July last year.
